After attending preparatory schools, he entered the University of North
Carolina at the age of sixteen and led his class during his whole course,
winning the valedictory oration when he graduated. Col. Morehead serve3d
four years of the Civil War on the staff of Governor Vance, but at its
close he entered upon a business life in which he becme prominently
identified with large affairs in which he was sessentially a financier.
He was a man of sound judgment, exact justice, robust, strong willed and
purposeful, as well as a respected patriot. Hospitable, kindly and
considerate, he was also deeply interested in religious life and was a
