Notes for Gordon JOHNSTON:
Graduate of Princeton in 1896; one of Colonel Roosevelt's "Rough Riders"
in 1898; later a volunteer in the Philippines, where he was wounded twice
and recommended for medals of honor and received them in 1910; was
captain of the Eleventh U.S. Cavalry; chief aide to General Leonard Wood;
chosen colonel of the Twelfth New York Infantry, and in World War I was
chief of staff of the 82d Division, and on request was also given a
regiment at the front, where he won the Distinguished Service Medal and
the French Croix d'Honneur, while he is now cited for the Distinguished
