Notes for Letita Harper MOREHEAD:
Mrs. Letita Harper (Morehead) Walker was greatly devoted to the work of
the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association as Vice Regent for North Carolina,
from the inception of that organization in 1859 to her death on January
2, 1908. She has left a most intersting account of "Blandwood" in 1865,
when General Beauregard and staff were there for some days, and it became
a rendezvous and hospital for sufferers from Appomattox. Mrs. Davis and
her children came there, but President Davis declined to bring disaster
on "Blandwood" by lodging there. Others came, Alexander Stephens and
General Johnston. Then came the Federal troops under General Cox, with
Burnside, Schofield, and Kilpatrick and their staffs, and finally
reconstruction. (Moreheads of North Carolina)
